The horse exicted for thousands of years. No one knows exactly where and when the horse was domesticated. It is believe that horses probably originated from North-East Europe and Central Asia nad was probably tamed there. The earliest pictorial records of a man riding a horse was discovered in the tomb of Horemheb, who ruled Egypt in 1300s B.C.

Once people discovered how to tame and particularly ride the horse, it opened up a lot of possibilities for him. it gave him freedom of movement and became an invaluable partner to him. Horse riding stands apart from any other sport because of one key element - the HORSE.
 
EARLY CIVILISATIONS
Chariot Racing  
A two-in-hand chariot circa 408 B.C. However the four-in-hand was introduced into the Olympics much earlier - in 680 B.C.  
Jousting
A popular sport in England in medieval times among the knights.
Polo
The earliest recorded games dates back to 600 B.C.
